First
comprehensive report on
Sacramento’s
Geographic Managed Care program is released.
The Sacramento
County Commission on Geographic Managed Care, a program of the Community
Services Planning Council, commissioned a study of the impacts of
Geographic Managed Care (GMC) in Sacramento County eight years after the
program’s inception. The results are presented in a report to the
community, “Sacramento Geographic Managed Care: Eight Years Later.”
The report takes a look at publicly available data on access to care,
quality of care, and the benefits and limitations of GMC, the managed
care model that uses private health plans to provide care to more than
160,000 Medi-Cal beneficiaries in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento
Hunger Commission and the Neighborhood Ride shuttle project are
featured in a recent new publication from the Community Food Security
Coalition, called "Weaving the Food Web." Text and photos
describe eight innovative projects throughout California that improve
access to wholesome foods through the creation of community-based food
systems. The Sacramento project is particularly interesting because
of its multiple focus; as the article noted the Neighborhood Ride shuttles
serve a wide range of transportation needs for seniors, disabled residents
and workers.
A pdf file of the publication is available from the Community Food Security
Coalition website at www.foodsecurity.org.
A limited number of free copies will be available at the Hunger Commission
office. E-mail the Hunger
Commission for more information.

New
Senior Information Centers
InfoLine
Sacramento has established two new Senior Information Centers where
older adults can go to access most of InfoLine's community resource
information via computer. Supplementary printed information on housing,
recreation opportunities and other topics is also available. The computer
program, Directory on Disk, is very user-friendly, and staff and volunteers
at the site can show people how to use it. The two new centers are located
at the Senior Center of Elk Grove and at the Stanford Settlement Senior
Center in North Sacramento. They join the original two centers at the
Cordova Senior Center and at the Older Adult Resource Center on Broadway
near Stockton Boulevard. For exact locations and hours call InfoLine
Sacramento at (916) 498-1000.

Disparities Task Forces
State data
indicates that the immunization rates among African Americans and Latinos
are among the lowest in the state. Two sub-committees have formed recently
to look at this issue in our region and develop a strategy to improve
immunization rates for these populations.
The African
American Health Disparities Task Force has decided on five project recommendations
for Sacramento County. Shirley Shelton, of the state Black Infant Health
program, presented a report on the group's findings at the July 9 Coalition
Meeting.
The Latino
Health Disparities Task Force met August 12. The group gathered and
reviewed data to determine which communities in Yolo County will most
benefit from a targeted outreach strategy. For more information, please
contact Terri Hayes at (916) 447-7063 ext. 305.
