The Road to Success

MichelleShe came to Sacramento Project Homeless Connect because she had a flat tire on her bike.  Before the day was out, Michelle Rose had a place to live.

Michelle is a bright-eyed, well-spoken, 40-something woman.  She once owned her own home, held a management position at a salon, and was married.  Michelle managed a rental property with her husband and was able to save money to support her family and animals.

Michelle’s husband squandered the family finances, and soon Michelle’s savings was gone. During this time, Michelle’s husband became increasingly controlling and abusive.  Michelle’s husband stopped paying his share of the bills.  Struggling with her husband’s behavior and her own desire to keep her finances in order, Michelle lost her job.  Before long, the rental property had to be sold, and then their house was foreclosed on.  “I was a prisoner in my own home, but the door was open,” Michelle explains.  Michelle didn’t know where to go or what to do.  After eight years of emotional and physical abuse, Michelle left her husband and became homeless.

Michelle was living in her car for nearly 4 months when she heard about Project Homeless Connect through the VOA Bannon Street Shelter.

Project Homeless Connect is a one-day event that provides services for homeless people in a consumer-centric “one stop shop” format. The event is modeled after the national Project Homeless Connect in cities across the country.  The project provides opportunities to be linked to housing assistance, legal assistance, health screenings and procedures, HIV testing and counseling, bike repair, haircuts, and youth services.

Using the “Housing First” strategy, Michelle was housed directly from Project Homeless Connect through Sacramento Self Help Housing (SSHH).  Michelle lives in a house with three roommates, whom she says feel like a family to her.  Michelle has maintained housing for the last seven months.

Through SSHH’s partnerships with other agencies in the community, Michelle took part in Women’s Empowerment, graduating from the program in September.  Michelle now volunteers at Women’s Empowerment and advocates for homeless women, raising homeless awareness in community groups, and giving back to the community that has helped her.

Story by April Tally, MSW Intern with Ending Chronic Homelessness Initiative.
